Trip to Moon : A Tribute to Moon Songs

I have been thinking of doing this programme for sometime. I was inspired by Isha ji, Sushila ji and Padmini ji of Radio Ceylon for doing a programme on songs related to the moon. There are numerous songs in Hindi films that focus on the Moon, Moonlight, stars which is a very interesting theme. So, today, you’re all going with me on a trip to the moon where we explore many songs featuring the symbol of romance, the Moon as a prominent theme.

One of the earliest songs I remember hearing related to the theme is actually a ‘Moon’ song because It is an English song in a Hindi film, probably one of the oldest ones, sung by Devika Rani for the film Karma (1933). The song, ‘Now The Moon Her Light Has Shed’ is a proper western tune composed by German composer Ornest Broadhurst and song. The style is typical of the high pitched English songs one hears on 78 rpms of the 20s by people like Rudy Valee. Its quite a short song, typical of the early days, where recordings of the songs on the sets with all the paraphenalia was not so easy. This film had also created a controversy for reportedly, the first kiss in Hindi talkie films, when released.

Let’s listen to it:-

So, this was an example of how Moon theme is ingrained not only in our culture but also in our Hindi films which are a reflection of our society to a large extent.

This was of course, not the only case of Devika Rani ji, who was called ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ in her heyday by her fans (It’s what inspired Pandit Narendra Sharma ji to write the title of the famous film years later!). She has sung more than one moon songs.

Let’s listen to Devika ji and Ashok Kumar singing one such moon song, ‘Bolo Sajni Bolo Chanda Ko Dekh Kyun Bhor Gayi Hai’ for the movie Nirmala (1938) composed by Saraswati Devi and written by the famous J S Kashyap.

Song 2:       Bolo Sajani Bolo - Nirmala 1938 - Devika Rani, Ashok Kumar

It is quite interesting to note that in many cultures, the moon is treated as someone perfect and in many cases, the lovers are adoringly called by different names of the moon itself. A pretty young damsel often wonders, whether She herself is the moon. Let’s listen to the one and only Khurshid sing one such song for composer Khemchand Prakash for the movie Chandani where She is wondering whether She is the moon or moonlight. The lyricist is the versatile D N Madhok.

Song3:       Main Chanda Hoon Ya Chandni - Chandni 1942 - Khursheed

This was a case where the damsel is calling herself the ‘chanda’ and many other adjectives. In many songs, one finds the lovers calling one the chand and the other the chakor or chakori.

Song 4:       Tu Chanda Main Chakori - Birhan 1948

Song 5:       Tu Hai Chand To - Aagosh 1953 - Lata

Song 8:       Chanda Re Jaa Re Jaa Re - Ziddi 1948 - Lata
