Myth #1: He was only played the Saxophone?
The truth is that he could also play Mandolin, Clarinet and Key Flute among other instruments. He has given contributions with these in many songs as well. Not many know for example, that his flute can be heard in the classic patriotic non-film, Aye Mere Watan ke Logon sung by Lata Mangeshkar with music by C. Ramchandra
Myth #2: He was only a musician.
The truth is that he also assisted S.D. Burman and later his son R.D. Burman as well. Not only that he teamed up with Basu Chakravarthy as a composer duo, Basu-Manohari who gave music to a number of films including Sabse Bada Rupaiya(1976), Kanhaiya(1980) and Chatpatee(1982).
Myth #3: He collaborated with R.D. Burman alone in the 70s.
The truth is that he has been a part of film industry from much before. He is known to have played for the legendary Pankaj Mullick. Later he came to Mumbai (then Bombay) at instance of composer Salil Chowdhury according to some sources. He contributed to hits of many composers other than the Burmans including C. Ramchandra, Shankar Jaikishan, Madan Mohan, Salil Chowdhury, Laxmikant Pyarelal and many others. A list of some of the songs he contributed to is available here.
