It is generally believed that double roles started in 1950s in movies like Afsana. 
The truth is that concept of double roles had started much earlier in Indian Films during the silent era.
Anna Salunkhe had played first double role in Indian film. He played roles of both Ram and Seeta in film 'Lanka Dahan' (1917).
Yesteryear superstar Patience Cooper probably played first twin sister role in Patni Pratap(1923). She also played mother-daughter in Kashmiri Sundari(1925). Here is a picture of the actress.

The name of the first double role player was Anna Salunke.HE was a Male and did the roles of Rama and Seeta both.
Kindly make the correction.

Of course he was a male. Was trying the politically correct way in some books these days. Will make the correction since you insist. Do keep visiting the site and contribute to it too.
