Noted singer Jagjit Singh passed away this morning. He had been ill since some weeks.
Ghazal lovers all over are in deep mourning due to this sad loss. May God bless his soul and give his singer-wife Chitra ji the strength to
bear this loss.
Composer Vinod's granddaughter Jacqueline Tawade (Nee Solomon) remembers him for us as below:-
Today, when I came to know of his demise, my heart wept remembering this immensely talented but humble singer. He was a big fan of my grandfather Vinod's punjabi songs. I still remember when he had visited us to talk about him and graciously spent time with us. My brother Rakesh had a guitar which was lying there. He asked if he could use it and started strumming it, while singing a song of Grandpa. His humility is stuff of legends. He had tea and samosas at our place. I feel so privileged to have spent some quality time with him with my family. Alas, all that remains of that day are fond memories. His loss is an irreplaceable one for all of us. May his soul rest in peace.
Tonight shall be long night. Am reminded of noted punjabi poet Shiv Batalvi's song, a brilliant piece of poetry which he had sung.

ghaman di raat lamin e
yaan mere geet lamen nain}-2

na bhedi raat mukdi e
na mere geet mukde nain

eh sar kine k dunge nain
kise ne haath na payi
na barsatan chadde nain
te na audan ch sukde nain

eh phat han ishq de yaaro
ina di ki dava hove
eh hath layan v dukhde ne
marham layan v dukh de nain

je gori raat hai chan di
tan kali raat hai kisdi
na lukda tareyan vich chan
na tare chan ch lukde ne
