Not many know that Durrani sahab had assisted Khwaja Khurshid Anwar in his debut movie Kurmai(1941) (Punjabi).
Khwaja Irfan Anwar, the composer's son recalls.
Khurshid Anwar's first film was Kudmai(Punjabi -1941). He was paid Rs.300 per month and the film was completed in three months. Besides being Assistant of Khurshid Anwar, G.M.Durrani sang two songs as well. A solo and another with Rajkumari and Iqbal Begum of Lyalpur. Just listen to the orchestration of the solo song, Dil Enjh Enjh Karda. Khurshid Anwar in his first film was years ahead of his peers. The most prominent instrument in this song is Clarinet which was played by Ustad Sohni Khan, Khurshid Anwar's friend from Lahore and pupil of Ustad Tawakkal Hussain (Guru of Khurshid Anwar). Kavi D.N.Madhok is the lyricist.
After Kudmai Khurshid Anwar was signed by A.R.Kardar for film Sharda which was to be directed by J.K.Nanda, the director of film Kudmai. However,Kardar decided to direct Sharda himself. Although Khurshid Anwar had already tuned a song - ghir ghir aai badariya written by D.N.Madhok, he left the film when he came to know that his fried Nanda was not the director of the film. D.N.Madhok passed on that tune to Naushad who used that as his own. Khurshid Anwar then signed film Angoori(1942) but left that as well after signing Ishara which J.K.Nanda was going to direct that film. Although he had recorded a song for film Angoori, he recommended G.M.Durrani to the Producer and left the film. Angoori was the only film of G.M.Durrani as Composer. The other song which G.M.Durrani sang in film Kudmai is based on Raag Pahadi and was a source of inspiration for Shanker Jaikishen when they composed the song - meri aankhon mein bus gaya koi re in film Barsat. Second antraa of the song of film Kudmai, which is sung by Rajkumari was almost taken as it is in the film Barsat's song:
